Secretary Clinton and the word 'Democracy'

My piece for Hudson-NY: Dodging 'Democracy' in Iraq.

No one in the press or in the analytic quarters seems to find it odd that Hillary and Richard Holbrooke are competing over who gets to call the shots in places like Iraq. They were both hurrying to 'pee' on the country, marking their territory. Clinton was late; Christopher Hill, Holbrooke's guy and the new ambassador, rushed to Baghdad a day before she 'unexpectedly' arrived.

Something to watch out for.

Seems the best that can be hoped for from the Dem Admin is that it will do the least damage to the Iraqi democracy. What a sad commentary on the Left?

Looking at the results of the provincial elections it was striking to see that all the major political parties, Sunni and Shia, seem to have won their share of the spoils. Also Maliki/Dawa having won absolute majorities in the two biggest cities at least has the virtue of stability.

It is really quite remarkable to see a genuine democracy and free, fair and representive electoral system buttressed by a free media unfolding in an Arab country. The much maligned Bush and Bremer deserve a lot of the credit, but most of it must go to the post-invasion shia and kurds who drew that constitution up and the Iraqi people themselves who faced down the terror to vote.

All you care about, gj, is getting the magus to kill Iraqis, in order to make America safe.

So, spare us the schtick about "creating democracy." All the killing by Saddam was done with U.S. support, and at the time no one cared.

The Dems came to power on a wave of
anti-Iraq war/anti-Bush anger.
" Bush lied,people died"
"No blood for Oil."
Any suggestion that the removal of Saddam improved the security of the USA, or that it has fostered the spread of " democracy " in Iraq may be uncomfortable for the Dems.

Not to worry, the Commander in Chief has spoken.

On February 27th, President Obama announced his plan to bring the War in Iraq to a responsible end. Today he addressed the troops in Iraq in a surprise visit before coming home from Europe. Find the full transcript below:

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. Thank you, guys. Let me say Multinational Force Iraq, Multinational Corps Iraq, Multinational Security Transition Command Iraq First Corps, America's Corp Band: Thanks to all of you.

Listen, I am so honored.

THE PRESIDENT: I love you back. (Applause.) I am honored -- I'm honored and grateful to be with all of you. And I'm not going to talk long because I want to shake as many hands as I can. (Applause.) And I've been talking all week. (Laughter.)

But there's a couple of things I want to say. Number one, thank you.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: You're welcome.

THE PRESIDENT: You know, when I was at Camp Lejeune I spoke about what it means for America to see our best and brightest, our finest young men and women serve us. And what I said then is something that I want to repeat to you, which is: You have performed brilliantly in every mission that has been given to you.

THE PRESIDENT: Under enormous strain and under enormous sacrifice, through controversy and difficulty and politics, you've kept your eyes focused on just doing your job. And because of that, every mission that's been assigned -- from getting rid of Saddam, to reducing violence, to stabilizing the country, to facilitating elections -- you have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country. That is an extraordinary achievement, and for that you have the thanks of the American people. (Applause.) That's point number one.
